[Exposició] Baró Estardipen. Presó general de gitanos i gitanes

Hall of Academy Square
June 14 to July 30

The great capture of 1749 was a key episode in the history of the persecution of the gypsy people in Spain. Led by figures such as the Marquis of Ensenada, this operation aimed at arresting and submissioning the Roma people, based on a project of extermination, justifying the repression with arguments based on social and economic prejudices.

Baron Estadipen has historically meant theFirst attempt at physical and cultural extermination of the Roma villageOn the part of the authorities, through the promulgation of the Royal Order for the Roma prison of June 28, 1749, which gave a series of instructions to imprison whole Gypsy families throughout the state, with a very comprehensive follow -up that would last for years. The repercussions of these acts have never been recognized or evaluated, neither culturally nor materially.

Despite the little data we have, we know thatBaron Estadipen affected approximately 12,000 Gypsy people. Some died and others were separated from their families. Children separated from their families and were sent to learn trades or to serve. The girls were sent to hospices and houses of mercy until they were old to serve. Baron Estadipen was applied without exception of age or sex, and without discriminating among the nomadic and nomadic Gypsy population, the first being the worst affected population, because it was more easily locatable.

The deprivation of the parental authority and the family separation that the prosecutors imposed on all Roma was not the only punishment to prevent their reproduction and extinguish the gypsy people, but the massive imprisonment of adult men and women, which lasted years, was sent to forced labor to the arsenals, prisons or factories.

The commemoration of Baron Estardipen’s 275th anniversary is aimed atmake known some unknown factsFor most people – from a feminist and anti -racist perspective – who have not had effective recognition from the entire population or by the public institutions responsible for guaranteeing social peace and fundamental rights, in order toRepair the memory of the Roma and Catalan people. Some facts that caused the state and which meant the first attempt at systematic genocide against Roma. This lack is at the base of national construction, and reproduces and strengthens the antigitanism and the construction of the gypsy people and its members as “the others”, and not as an integral part of the country.
