Exhibition “Insurrecta Sewing Carnival, a decolonial practice"
On November 14, 15 and 16, 2024, the 6th edition of the Sustainable Challenge took place. On this occasion, 30 fashion design students of British, Dutch and Spanish schools participated in a creation marathon entitled “Insurrectic sewing carnival, a decolonial practice”. Students accepted the challenge of designing clothing through the methodology of participatory design, with the aim of understanding other perspectives beyond their own, with the support of experts and mentors in the sector, in an exercise in experimentation to question all those decisions that are made during the process of fashion production and design, which are usually made with a white, extractive and privileged look at the world. In this edition, participants were reflected on urgency and the possibility of finding strategies for disrupting the extractive dynamics of racial capitalism in the landscape of unsustainability crisis that crosses the fashion industry. This exhibition shows the projects created by the six student teams. The design of the pieces came from their reflection on the theme of the challenge, the dialogue with the models and the use of discarded clothing provided by the Roba Amiga Association, creating unique added value pieces. Sustainable Challenge is an initiative that seeks to rethink the future of the fashion sector from the point of view of sustainability.
