Macbeth enters the darkness cabaret

In recent years, we have seen all kinds of adaptations of the tragic story of ambition and death starring the Scottish nobleman who becomes king, almost two per year. From the dark and confusion of the assembly of Paul Carrió to the free to the tragic farce in version of Ionsco of the TNC, not to mention the adaptation of proximity of the akademy and the large format of the Liceu with sculptures of Jaume Plensa. It becomes necessary for originality to raise a new approach to the work, and this is what the director does Oriol Boggi with To Macbeth Songa show-concert that fuses Shakespearean tragedy with live music from the London band The Tiger Lillies.

Fleeing from a conventional dramatization, the assembly goes into a hybrid format that combines songs and the theatrical performance in the original English of the piece (with subtitles). The work is built around the 22 songs composed for the occasion Martyn Jacquesleader of The Tiger Lillies, who, along with his training companions, take on the role of the three witches who prophesy the rise and fall of Macbeth and his wife. With a trajectory that began in 1989, the English band unfolds their expressionist air every night that combine elements of the Brechtian cabaret, the British Popular Opeta and experimental music, transgression in search of dark and provocative territories. Martyn Jacques, crooner From Ultratomb, he strolls his characteristic Falset by compositions that narrate stories from a disturbing poetry that goes as the ring to the finger to the Trucenta Fable of the Scottish King.

Three performers of the Barcelona scene complete the squad and proposal –Cisteró marshmall, Enric Cambray and Andrew Tarbet– They act as a thousand faces minstrels at the dramatization of a story that runs between fun melodies and a stage design of instruments that evoke a cabaret of glooms and nightmares. In parallel with the songs, Oriol Broggi has created a concentrated narrative that goes back the main events of the Shakespearian story, a kind of children’s story, “grotesque and torn”, according to the company. The always story: ambition, blood and madness, classic elements passed through the sieve of irony that carries the crown of dark lyricism.

To Macbeth Song It is a new step from the company La Perla 29 to internationalize its theater after the season that the show 28 and a half He had at the Teatre de la Colline in Paris, or performances in Lisbon and Montpellier. The Musicotheatral Meeting mixes two different stage traditions that coincide with a taste for the craft and the most ancient forms of popular theater. “Sleep is not more,” they repeat the witches, Macbeth will never be able to sleep with as much attraction as their story generates. An immortal story that now finds a new macabre beat with the hypnotic sound of Shakespeare’s original language.
